I’ve occasionally heard Dane Cook, one of the stars of “Good Luck Chuck,” described as a comedian. I find this confusing, since my understanding is that comedians are people who say and do things that are funny.

Perhaps Mr. Cook is some new kind of conceptual satirist whose shtick is to behave in the manner of a person attempting to be funny without actually being, you know, funny. Or maybe he answered an ad in the back of a magazine and sent away for a mail-order license to practice comedy.

Whether Jessica Alba, his co-star, acquired her acting credentials by similar means is an issue that will be addressed if she ever tries to act. To be fair (but why?) she does expend a little effort in “Good Luck Chuck,” pretending to be goofy and clumsy, doing stuff like running into a metal pole, catching her skirt in a car door and upending a tray of dentist’s instruments.

But the main audience for this dim little sex comedy has no particular interest in seeing Ms. Alba act. They want to see her in her underwear and also to confront one of the central cultural questions of our time: will she take her top off?

No spoilers here! In the meantime plenty of less famous women do take their tops off, which will make “Good Luck Chuck” a must-see for young men with a subscription to Maxim but no access to the Internet.

The intended viewership seems to consist of guys who fantasize about sleeping with Ms. Alba, which may represent a reasonably large share of the population. The actual paying audience, however, will more likely be those poor, deluded souls — they’ve Hi-lited all the relevant passages of that notorious pickup manual “The Game” — who think they might really have a shot.

The makers of “Good Luck Chuck” (it was directed by Mark Helfrich from a script by Josh Stolberg) try for the blend of filth and sentimentality that has made movies like “The Wedding Crashers” and the recent productions of the Judd Apatow atelier such big hits.

What they end up proving (by negative example) is that even lowbrow comedy requires skill and intelligence. Instead they offer breasts, penis jokes and a cavalcade of wildly unoriginal ideas.

Mr. Cook’s character has a doofus friend (Dan Fogler, in case “Balls of Fury” didn’t satisfy your need to be reminded of his existence). Ms. Alba’s character is crazy about penguins. Her brother (Lonny Ross) smokes a lot of pot.

Apparently the very notion of fat women having sex is screamingly hilarious, though not as funny as the image of a three-breasted woman or a chubby man having sex with a grapefruit. (Typing that phrase turns out to be kind of amusing, but trust me, you don’t need to see it.)

It all ends with the guy running through the airport to bring back the girl, who’s about to take off for Antarctica. I mean, come on!

What passes for cleverness is the movie’s central conceit: Chuck (that would be Mr. Cook) suffers under a curse that causes every woman he goes to bed with to fall in love with the next guy who asks her out. When the local ladies find out about this, Chuck gets a lot of action, but then — after a long, split-screen montage of his priapic exertions — he starts to feel empty and used. Me too. But if the logic of “Good Luck Chuck” holds, the next movie I see should be a masterpiece.

“Good Luck Chuck” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has naughty words and topless women.

Not exactly dull but never interesting either, “Resident Evil: Extinction” is the third installment in the video-game-derived series of films starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, a superhuman warrior fighting zombie hordes.

The movie’s fake-out opening reveals that the sinister Umbrella corporation (represented by the evil Dr. Isaacs, played by Iain Glen, a recurring cast member) is testing clones of Alice, hoping to use immunities in her blood to develop a vaccine to control the infection.

This is a dumb but intriguing germ of an idea. But it predictably takes a back seat to endless scenes of Alice and other returning actors (including Oded Fehr and Mike Epps) moving toward and through a buried Las Vegas while mowing down zombies with blades, guns and a truck fitted with a cow-catcher.

The director, Russell Mulcahy (“Highlander”), pulls off a few decent set pieces, including attacks by skinless dogs and Hitchcock-inspired clouds of glassy-eyed undead crows. But they have no weight because there’s no characterization or emotion, just slick mayhem.

The movie wasn’t screened for critics, but that seems less a tacit admission of a dip in quality than of the fact that all the films are just noisy time killers, about as engrossing as watching someone else play a video game.

History keeps repeating itself but there are very few in Hindi film industry that is eager to learn a lesson from it. Mohit Ahalawat the good looking hunk, landed in Mumbai some years back with his bag full of money and Ram Gopal Varma grabbed the lad and presented him in 'James' and 'Shiva', both being super flops.

He was also supposed to play Jai in 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay' later released as 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag'. But, Mohit opted out and left the Ramu's camp to look for better opportunities elsewhere.

Now, Gautam another rich boy of Mumbai has landed in Ramu's factory. This time Ram Gopal Varma plays another game; he forms a new company - Future Works - and puts his name on the banner as a "Quality Stamp". But Ramu's name doesn't sell any more.

If he keeps on making films like this, the day isn't far when his name will lose all the sheen that he has acquired from 'Satya', 'Rangeela' and 'Company'. His protégé Manish Shrivastava makes a film that only insults his master's name. 'Go' is a disaster from the very word go. And, most probably Ramu himself knew its fate and if not then why did he distance himself from the media before the release of the film. Significantly, Ramu's favorite Nisha Kothari was also conspicuous by her absence.

The story of 'Go' is based on the lovers as they are seen in Hindi films post-'Bobby'. Two lovers intensely in love with each other elope from their homes and enter into an adventurous journey though hollow. Gautam (another debutant from Ramu's factory) plays Abhay. He is in love with the sweet and seductive girl Vasu (Nisha Kothari). Both elope from home and bang into police, bad guys and politicians.

The film moves on this very thin line. No doubt there are actors like Rajpal Yadav, Ravi Kale and Govind Namdeo, but what an actor can do, if he is given a script with no head or tail. The film is made for launching Gautam, so his fate depends on its success or otherwise. If he is banking only on this project then his stars seem to be bleak.

To write a review of a film like this is a pain in the neck of a critic. I have been an admirer of Ram Gopal Varma for long. Even his films like 'Drohi' and 'Raat' were praised by us though they fell flat at the box office.

His 'Shiva' was no doubt a great takeoff, but the problem with Ramu is that he has alienated himself from the rest of the world. And, this shows in the making of 'Go' as well. The movie is a sort of collection of scenes from various films. Once you come across a scene from Man Mohan Desai's film, then from that of Prakash Mehra and later from Ramu's own film!

Manish Shrivastava must have seen many DVDs to make this flick before coping frame compositions and camera movements from other films. The film keeps on progressing and the viewer continues sitting on the seat of Bollywood Ka Boss, counting scenes from other films.

Nisha Kothari does nothing new to show her assets. She should look for some meaty roles under other banners, if she wishes to grow as an actress. She is wasting her talent in these kinds of films. She has the potential to deliver but she needs some good stories.

The only sign of hope lies in its action sequences. The film has some very good car chase sequences. Had Manish made the film as a thriller, the results would have been quite different. P. Kumar needs a pat on his back for his work and equally praiseworthy is cinematography by Jalees Oberoi.

These two technicians have tried to bring in some soul in the otherwise dead film. 'Go' can never be accepted as a film from Ramu's camp. If he has made this film with Gautam's money, then it's like showing big dreams of the star world to him.

Ramu has done this to Mohit Ahlawat in the past and now to Gautam. New comers need to take lesson from this film. That will be the only positive outcome. A bad job from Ramu's camp; it's like a punishment to the viewers for watching 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag' and 'Go'.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa is the Hindi language remake of the critically acclaimed 1993 Malayalam blockbuster, Manichitrathazhu (translation - The Ornate Lock) which was also remade in Kannada (Aaptamitra) starring Vishnuvardhan in 2004, and in Tamil and Telugu (Chandramukhi) starring Rajnikanth in 2005. The film will feature Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Amisha Patel and Shiny Ahuja in pivotal roles with Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav in supporting roles. Songs are by Pritam (music) and Sameer (lyrics), with the background score by Ranjit Barot. The editors are N. Gopalakrishnan and Arun Kumar.

Vidya Balan will be the female protagonist of the movie. In the Malayalam original, Shobhana enacted the role and it was a National Award winning performance for the Best Actress. In the Tamil version(Chandramukhi), Jyothika donned the role and was awarded best actress award by Tamil nadu Government.

The film began shooting on February 18, 2007 for a 41-day schedule at Jaipur, India with a release date on October 12, 2007.

n the multiplex era, jungle adventures are the unexplored genre and by far the most untamed, unpopular and unproductive style of filmmaking. Karan Johar's assistant Soham tried to bring out the adventures of "Discovery Channel" into his first solo directorial work 'Kaal' but it proved a damp squib and thereafter such projects failed to find its grounding in the marquee.

The concept has again germinated with low hype. Ironically this time it's another new director Dilip Sood, at the helm of affairs. There have been big outburst of new directors every year and every one tries to impress with his peculiar or innovative trend of filmmaking but only a few succeed. 'Chhodo Na Yaar', an urbane-friendly titled film, proves to be a too meek competitor as compared to 'Kaal' and predictably a disastrous outing at the box office.

There's no harm in placing something unique but the soul of the subject should have a daunting impact on viewers. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a horrifying experience for the filmmakers inasmuch as it showcases such amateurishly conceived subject with some insipid performances.

'Chhodo Na Yaar' is badly marred by incompetent acting, shoddy screenplay, no good scripting and above all poor direction. It's conceived as enthralling adventure saga of three adventure loving guys but it all ends up as amateurish documentary thriller with no promises. Bollywood still needs competent workmanship in this genre with a fine set of actors and a director to give it a thriving boost. Against all odds, this genre has never allured Gen X audiences and never has any filmmaker ventured into this style of filmmaking.

Even the trusted and prodigal Karan Johar admits that 'Kaal' was his career's major disappointment that finally resulted in a tiff between him, his co-producer and actor friend Shah Rukh Khan. On the contrary, 'Chhodo Na Yaar' is a small budget fun-fare where lesser known actors along with amateurishly skilled director try to enforce innovative subject with perplexed scripting to attract multiplex audiences. It largely focuses on the expedition adventurers but when it comes to solving murder mystery, the film goes blank due to lack of good scripting.

The film thrives on what happens when the road you tread turns out to be one to ultimate disaster? It further stretches to extra length when it tries to be introspective about the mysterious fun loving adventure turning out to be the biggest nightmare? In between these two issues, there is grueling murder mystery of a young girl who has been brutally murdered in the hilly regions. 'Chhodo Na Yaar' swivels about these plots but fails to solve the mystery. It culminates into an absurd ending.

The film is a story of three friends -- Ravi (Jimmy Sheirgill), Shiv (Kabir Sadanand) and Sunny (Farid Amri), who hail from a filmmaking institute and dare prove their creative skills. Depressed and bored by their routine living styles, they venture into documentary filmmaking about the myth prevailing in the hills of North India (Shivpuri, Himachal Pradesh). Though it was a scary situation that they got themselves into yet they were confident about their endeavors. Every other candidate in their college makes documentaries on poverty, prostitution or politics but they decided to choose this scary adventure fun fare as their subject.

They were unaware about the fact that this very myth could change their lives forever. So, they moved out into the jungles for something different and exciting to prove their merit as competent filmmakers. On flip side, there were people like Ravi's girlfriend Rashmi (Kim Sharma), Shiv's father (Vallabh Vyas) and their professor Dr Saxena (Ahmed Khan) who discouraged them from taking such "far-reaching" dangerous steps. Dr. Saxena, an experienced campaigner, had severe doubts about the practicality of choosing such a terrifying subject but the trio was enthusiastic about their plan.

Initially, it was all fun rides for them as they flirted with girls, sang and drank but thereafter it was real disaster in those horrendous jungles. The gory tales about mysterious "mandir" always haunted them. So also the mysterious white "kurta" clad girl often disillusioned their mind and visions in the jungles. It all ends up with Shiv and Sunny falling off from cliff of the valley with Ravi surviving with old memories of this unfortunate expedition.

The climax of the film was amateurishly handled as the solution of the murder mystery was expected in the end but it ends up on a cold note. Jimmy Shergill along with Kim Sharma and "pujari" (Vinod Nagpal) goes up to the site of accident but the film fails to ponder about the murder mystery of the white "kurta" clad girl. It's all an amateurish style of workmanship on almost on all accounts and therefore it turns out to be a messy and chaotic thriller.

Jimmy Shergill proves incompetent again in lifting the momentum and prospects of the film that requires great temperament and flair in performance. The first few sequences where he shows his disgust at being a contemporary actor shows his lack of skills in emoting out. Kabir Sadanand tries to replicate Sharmaan Joshi style of performance of the "Jat" boy from 'Rang De Basanti' but disappoints completely with half baked acting skills.

None of his scenes offers any moment of laughter and thrill. Rather this irritates with his tattered Haryanvi accent. Farid Amiri is expressionless in delivering emotions and proves again to be a side-kick material. Kim Sharma has negligible scope of proving herself in her miniscule role.

Anand Raj Anand's music has some sparks in tracks like "Talwar Re" but the rest of them are tediously boring and time consuming. Sham Kaushal's action skills work well in the film. Cinematography (Pushan Kriplani) works methodically with the scripting of the film and captures the hilly regions with great skills.

Debutante director Dilip Sood adds up to the tally of non-promising first time directors because of his poor conceptualization.

'Chhodo Na Yaar' is expected to be a non-starter from the day one and will be a losing preposition on all accounts for its producers and distributors.

Very good news for the Hindi film industry that of late has been short of film stars. One more actor is added to its petty cash box. Yes, he has the gene to become the next star and that too after a wait of more than six years. Post- Hrithik Roshan, there have been many debuts in the Hindi film industry, but none looks as promising as Neil Nitin Mukesh.

He is son of singer Nitin Mukesh and grandson of legendary singer Mukesh. It's surprising to note that Neil too comes from a music lineage (Hrithik's past two generations have been in music). So, it's singing time for Hindi Film industry. Luckily, Neil has already bagged three films' contract from Adlabs.

Hopefully, the writers and the directors needing a new young face would soon queue up to sign Neil. Since the fees for stars have skyrocketed in the Hindi film industry, Kunal Khemu and Imran Hashmi have been demanding more than ten million per film! There are so many corporate houses and filmmakers, but not as many stars as required.

Hence, the launch of Neil is welcome. And, mind you he not only has Italian looks but can act very well. This is proved by the fact that there is just one song in the film and still he comes out a winner.

'Johny Gaddar' is a thriller to watch. Though you may have already watched trashes like 'Red', 'Cash', 'Aggar' and others this year and enjoyed a lot of laughing by watching comedy capers, yet this neatly weaven thriller is a film to watch out far. Director Sriram Raghavan left his mark with his first film 'Ek Hasina Thi' and that too in the midst of a rat race for formulae films.

His style is his distinction and he returns in 'Johny Gaddar' though after a long wait but it's worthwhile. Last time he had seasoned actors like Saif and Urmila, but this time he puts his bet on a newcomer.

The movie is about a gang that is on the verge of catching a huge sum of money. The group is led by an old timer (Dharmendra) and the youngest in the lot is Johny (Neil). All goes well until the boy feels the necessity for money.

He runs away with the money and thus betrays the gang. But will he like to be a "Gaddar" (traitor)? This is the turning point in the film. Being a suspense thriller this needs to have the climax untold at least here.

'Johny Gaddar' belongs to three persons; first one is Sriram Raghavan who believes in his story. He never allows his heart to take over from his mind. He plans and executes each and every shot according to the script and a film like these needs to be 100 percent perfect on paper. 'Johny Gaddar' can never be made on locations; it has to be made on paper and then to be shot.

Sriram Raghavan made a shocker in 'Ek Hasina Thi' and 'Johny Gaddar' only proves his point that there is a huge audience for such these, else why will every book stall across railway stations in India sell such books? Comedies may be in demand but thrillers are evergreen. A thriller needs strong plot points and in 'Johny Gaddar', you find plenty.

Neil Nitin Mukesh carries his director's ideas forward. He plays the main protégé of the writer. It is his character that makes the film look true. He is vulnerable, has emotions, thinks like any other teenager boy, yet he has guts to follow his thoughts and that's why he looks different. Neil spent many years preparing himself behind the camera to make an appropriate appearance.

Carrying the heritage of Mukesh and his father with him, he may have got a break in the big camps of Yashraj, Dharma or Chopras, but he waited for a right story to make a break and in 'Johny Gaddar' he has it. I remember having seen him at script writer Sameer Sharma's place.

Shanu, his sister and casting director, were gaga over Neil and I also found a spark in him that could match Hrithik's charisma. He has acted very well and has even emoted brilliantly.

The third artist to watch out for in 'Johny Gaddar' is none other than our own Dharamendra. First, 'Metro', then 'Apne' and now 'Johny Gaddar'. This is celebration time for the old He man. He delivers a hat trick blasting the myth that only Shah Rukh or Amitabh could do it.

He has been the forgotten material in Indian film industry but as Sheshadri he only makes his brand stronger in the film fraternity. He is one actor who if given a right role would any day crack the right equations with the viewers.

'Johny Gaddar' has some more talent. Vinay Pathak is once again marvelous. He fits the role like a T. He has finally marked his place in the industry and his name brings in value for a project. Zakir Hussain does superb acting; he delivers what was demanded from him.

Daya Shetty and Rasika Joshi also provide apt support. Rimi Sen surprises with her change in attitude. It must have been a relief for her to get rid off the comedy capers. She gives a tough competition to another superb actress in the film, Ashwini Kalsekar.

On the whole, 'Johny Gaddar' has a class appeal but it's equally entertaining for masses. The opening may not have been very good but it's sure to rake in major money for its makers in coming days. The film is a must watch for all those who love thrillers. A Paisa Vasool, indeed!

Campus-capers have always been a delightful warfare for new genre of filmmakers. Such movies offer enough funky substance and meat to rejoice with lots of humorous and chirpy situational punches and gags.

This was witnessed lately in Rakesh Mehra's super successful 'Rang De Basanti' that had the backdrop of Delhi University. 'Dil Dosti Etc' tries to rejuvenate the same environment of "masti" of Delhi University in this fun loving cool caper. It carries the similar youthful buzz in its situational romance, action and lewd moments but the desired substance of emoting the heart is completely missing.

Realistic cinema has bestowed some really engrossing aspects of filmmaking and black comedy is one such aspect from where the film relishes with its plots and characters. 'Dil Dosti Etc' brings a basic idea that when we are young and believe that possibilities are endless. These possibilities can be in the form of betrayal, greed, friendship, voyeurism, sexual perversion and love, coming in one's way of life.

'Dil Dosti Etc' should be complimented for its racy cosmopolitan thrill that it creates by plagiarizing real life incidents with some whacky and lewd humor. The film has outlook of hi-profile Page 3 parties, big ambitions of reaching the top in the glam world, filth of red-light areas and university politics with some engrossing moments.

The film touches almost every aspect in its first phase but the latter half fails to culminate the essence of narrator's thinking about life. 'Dil Dosti Etc' flourishes as an autobiographical narration of a rich and confused billionaire Apurva (Imaad Shah) and about his experiences about love, lust, passion, education and flirtatious attitude in life. It tracks down some really splendid ideas, but the climax looks absurd.

'Dil Dosti Etc' explores the significance of "dil" (heart), "dosti" (friendship) with a bit of etc that adds spice and sometimes sorrow in one's life. Undoubtedly, the film draws its inspiration from the splendid success of 'Rang De Basanti' as the director prefers to shoot the film in the surroundings of Delhi University.

Filmmaker Prakash Jha has so far been introspective about Bihar politics and that has worked well in his 'Gangajaal' and 'Apaharan', but this time he is completely inclined towards the metropolitan style of entertainment. Since multiplexes are heavily patronized by teenagers and youngsters, 'Dil Dosti Etc' is his trendiest endeavor so far.

Director Manish Tiwary impresses as a competent storyteller when he tries to pitch some real life humor and spice in its execution and narration. The film carries the youthful fever but the introspective outlook about university life and the glam world is far from adequate.

'Dil Dosti Etc' centers around two hostellers - Sanjay Mishra (Shreyas Talpade) and Apurv (Imaad Shah) - who study in Delhi University but are as different as chalk from cheese. If Apurv belongs to cosmopolitan Delhi, then Sanjay hails from Bihar. Apurv is the son of a rich billionaire and Sanjay belongs to the middle class family of Bihar. Apurv's approach towards life and love is quite puzzling as he tries to find love everywhere while Sanjay plans for golden career in college politics.

Apurv finds solace in the company of prostitute - Vaishali (Smriti Mishra) and tries to find the meaning of true love by associating himself with school girl - Kintu (Ishitta Sharma). His approach towards love is flirtatious and he is like a silent Casanova with world at its feet. Sanjay's love interest is hi-profile college girl, Prerna (Nikita Anand), who dreams of making big in the glam world. 'Dil Dosti Etc' moves forward with these love relationships and aims at the solution of having a contended love life.

Prostitute Vaisali (Smriti Mishra) has never been emotionally attached to her countless customers and so also with Apurva. The relation grows intense when she tries to date him and nurses love for him but everything goes berserk. On the contrary, school girl Kintu (Ishitta Sharrma) knows that Apurv is flirting with her. She even settles for physical relationship but is still confused about taking any firm decision. The ending sounds a bit absurd when the director fails to explain her stand on this love-relationship.

Model Prerna (Nikita Anand) being attracted to Apurva and having sexual relationship has no concrete grounding. Even her carrying on relationship with obstinate Sanjay who resents her modeling career remains unexplained. 'Dil Dosti Etc' could have been really a delightful endeavor if all substantial variables about characters were confronted with desired skills.

Apurva's (Imaad Shah) character is largely built and inspired from Siddarth's character in 'Rang De Basanti', but the razor-edged characterization is completely missing. Why do Apurva and Sanjay converse about sex and love in their meetings? Life is beyond sex and love, too. So why neglect other aspects of life? Apurva's first choice of dating with prostitute is confusing.

Was it out of loneliness or greed for sex? Imaad Shah is completely a big miscast in the character and his acting needs a lot more polishing before he plays pivotal role in a commercial film.

So, 'Dil Dosti Etc' completely belongs to Shreyas Talpade and it's indeed a good comeback for him after disastrous 'Aggar'. Unfortunately, his characterization of playing a college big boss has some meat and it shows in the first half of the film where he confronts the rival gang.

Manish Tiwary has failed to conceptualize the filth and dirt of college politics and even all planted love relationships are half baked. Shreyas' death in the end is quite confusing and so does the narration that fails to pinpoint the real culprit.

Debutante Manish Tiwary has innovative subject in his hand but the execution lacks gripping for a competent entertainer. But, overall it's a good first attempt at multiplex cinema. Cinematography (Arvind K) captures the urbane rowdy culture of Delhi University with ease. Music (Siddarth-Suhas) has tracks like "Dum Laaga" that can really fuel up youthful passions.

Shreyas Talpade is outstanding while Imaad Shah disappoints with his impoverished diction and unpolished acting skills. Nikita Anand, Ishita Sharma and Smrita Mishra have been daring and bold in their assigned characters and have complemented well with the needs of the script.

'Dil Dosti Etc' will be drawing major crowds in Delhi where it is expected to meet with promising results.

Like all youth-oriented films, it's likely to be opening to big houses during the first three days but thereafter there can be decline in collections.

It's just so intense. Bourne says to Simon Ross (Considine) "This isn't some newspaper story, this is real" and in the audience you almost believe him. The camera shakes, but remains steady enough for you to see everything and feel like you're there with Bourne as he tries to elude his pursuers, and the performances are so good that these guys seem as though they are the characters they're portraying, instead of just being actors performing well-written roles. The action scenes are so brutally fast-paced and well choreographed that they seem instinctive instead of planned to the minutest movement; the stunt-work is nothing short of amazing.The pacing is just incredible. It keeps driving forward towards its conclusion, but not so fast that it leaves you struggling to piece together the plot; the script delivers the information you need as quickly and clearly as possible before moving on to the next tense action set-piece. While they're often simple (the Waterloo sequence is essentially just a man on a phone being watched by a man on a phone) they're charged with such dramatic intensity that you can't take your eyes off them. The film is just so focused on powering forwards that you can't help being swept along by it.With its intense action set-pieces, brilliantly paced storyline, and intelligent examination of the decisions made in the name of national security, the Bourne series is one that accurately captures the ambiguities of our age. Comedies, the flavor of the season, surface again with gusto and thrill! A comedy has been proclaimed to be a sure shot formula for box office success and this is evident from the recent successful releases. Besides this promising commercial aspect, when there are names like Priyadarshan, Sharman Joshi, Rajpal Yadav and Tusshar Kapoor on credits, one can expect fun in unlimited form.

Priyadarshan's golden streak of success through comical flicks maintains its top form in 'Dhol'. Yes, the film entertains to the hilt with minor hiccups though but still it's the powerful comical quotient that rules the show.

Dhol' brings back memories of yesteryear classic 'Padosan' and hits like 'Golmaal-Fun Unlimited' and 'Hera Pheri' for its premise, execution and treatment. Priyadarshan's intellect of innovating hilarious situations and complementing them with quizzical one-liners and chirpy dialogues is the highlight of this fun frolic entertainer. It's first big occasion when he has gone miles ahead from his regular formulae to imbibe the traits of "male bonding" principles for his comical flick.

Like all his successful works, he has maintained hilarious flow of events in 'Dhol' though with a suspense thriller that retards the film's pace. It would have been better if this dark shaded suspense thriller was removed to maintain the comical flow of the film.

'Dhol' is presumed to be an inspirational lift from decades' old flop 'Parda Hai Parda' (1992), which was originally lifted from Malayalam, hit 'Harihar Nagar'. No matter where does the idea or the inspiration come from, it's important how it entertains the audience. 'Partner', 'Heyy Babby', 'Dhamaal' and now it's Priyadarshan's 'Dhol'. It seems the audiences have given their positive verdict in favor of comedies.

'Dhol's basic premise centers around four happy-go-lucky guys who dream of being rich without toiling hard for it. Their basic aim is to enjoy life king-size by marrying rich girls and making their career out of their wives' parental money and wealth. Greedy yet still good at heart, they get condemnation from every quarter but their spirits of building dreamy castles doesn't die.

'Dhol' is a story about four young boys - Sameer alias Sam (Tusshar Kapoor), Pankaj alias Pakkya (Sharman Joshi), Markand alias Maru (Rajpal Yadav) and Gautam alias Goti (Kunal Khemu). Though all of them share one room, yet they are always unable to pay their house rent.

In a hot pursuit to enhance their standard of living, they risk their life by venturing into a small business but everything goes berserk. Maru deceives his corrupt uncle (Tiku Talsania) while Pakkya takes liberty with her relations by misleading his sister and her husband (Asrani). To get rid of this financial mess, they plan to charm a rich girl and finally marry her.

Dark and dusky bombshell Kanchan (Tanushree Dutta) arrives in their neighborhood and all the four pranksters try to impress her. The crux of 'Dhol' triggers off from their playful antics and this is where typical Priyadarshan's stamp rules the show. On flip side, Kanchan has dreadful past of losing his brother Rahul in this town. His brother's best friend Jay (Arbaaz Khan) and his beloved Sophie (Payal Rohtagi) are the only two clues that can solve the mystery of her brother's murder.

Jay was an accomplice in Zikembo's (Murli Sharma) criminal act and now he is looking for the mysterious "dhol". All the four pranksters proclaim to be Rahul's best friend so as to befriend Kanchan and finally marry her. Zikembo calls all these guys to his place for this mysterious "dhol". The climax of 'Dhol' is very entertaining and hilarious and its Priyadarshan's brilliant vision that makes comical acts look so simple.

'Dhol's brightest aspect comes in the form of Rajpal Yadav's comical acts. The film highlights his exceptional comical timing and his one-liners work impressively in delivering hilarious moments in the film. Rajpal's witty conversation with Tiku Talsania followed by the scenes where he schemes for bank loan with other friends is highly amusing. The climax scenes where he fights and gets beaten by villains are also finely executed.

Kunal Khemu was impressive in his first comical appearance after the success of 'Kalyug' and 'Traffic Signal'. His witty and humorous dialogues suit his personality and character and work well in the first half of the film.

The scene where he tries to enter Tanushree's house and gets beaten by her grandmother draws laughter. Tusshar Kapoor maintains his top form in comedies and should stick to such flicks rather than trying something silly in movies like 'Aggar' or 'Kya Love Story Hai'.

Tusshar's role may not be as amusing as it was in 'Kya Kool Hai Hum' or 'Golmaal' but still it has enough substance to make his presence felt. The scene where he along with three other tries to douse "havan" fire is hilarious, and so also the one when he gets a flak from Om Puri.

Like Tusshar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi maintains his peculiar tinge in witty humorous one-liners and funny acts. His boxing scene sequence and later changing his identity with Rajpal Yadav are some of his finest performances.

'Dhol' is filled with loads of such comical "masti" and it's difficult to pick and choose the best scene from the flick. The slapstick comedy reaches its peak when all the four boys throw Om Puri's car from the cliff , Rajpal Yadav tries to impress Om Puri in the market and finally, when in the climax they confront two sects of gangs and eventually escape. However, there are minor dents that retard the flow in the second half where the murder mystery deepens with extra-stretched sequences. Despite all such insignificant minuses, 'Dhol' promises a good deal for young audiences who relish comical flicks.

The movie's scripting, dialogues and screenplay (Manisha Korde) have been excellent. Cinematography (Piyush Shah) has all the elements of enticing pop genre and shows bright edges in a couple of thrilling song sequences. Pritam's music is a big disappointment though and is the weakest in recent times. Except for title track "O Yaara Dhol Baajake", none of the tracks has fire or flare to entice audiences.

After 'Hera Pheri', there hasn't been a single film where Priyadarshan has faltered with comedy, and 'Dhol' maintains his impeccable record. The film is expected to open with encouraging box office response and draw big returns from metro cities.

It's likely to be more dominating than its contemporary releases and will be good news for Bollywood box office barometer. In nutshell, Priyadarshan's 'Dhol' sounds loud and big!

here are some trends that never change but there are others that fail to remain the same for ever. Erotic thrillers fall in such a genre that sees huge upsurge, especially after the spectacular success of 'Murder' and 'Jism'. However, the buzz is that such films have lost their steam; their concept has failed with strings of flops. 'Aggar', a film directed by Anant Mahadevan, falls in this genre where the concept of extra-marital affair, lust, passion and deceit has been revisited in different plots and characters.

Producers - Narendra Bajaj and Shyam Bajaj - have passion for erotic thrillers that has been evident in their 'Aksar' and 'The Train'. This bitter flavor continues in 'Aggar'. Ironically, this is Anant Mahadevan's second directorial film about lust, passion and deceit with slightly different plot and actors. The director has recently experienced colossal disaster in 'Victoria No. 203'. Besides, all his last endeavors have proved losing prepositions.

After recreating sultry sleazy buzz with chartbusting tracks in 'Aksar', Anant Mahadevan tries to recreate different tales out of plots of films like Hollywood's 'Psycho' and 'Double Jeopardy' and Bollywood's 'Darr' and 'Darrar' but with dismal results. 'Aggar' runs on many sub-plots and confused characterizations.

The overall impulse of a typical erotic thriller is completely missing. The script-writer (S. Farhan) has delivered a different storyline with some tangy twists and turns but the acting department, music and below average direction has made it an ordinary show.

Erotic thrillers rest upon the intimidating plots, hot-chemistry and desirable performances from lead actors. Unfortunately, this film disappoints on all these fronts. So, the result is disappointing and below par. The soft faced actors like Shreyas Talpade and Tushar Kapoor prove too incompetent and complete miscast in their respective roles. Both actors look underaged compared to their characters and are no match to Udita Goswami's sensual binge in the film.

Udita Goswami's fading charm hasn't got enough oomph and meets with below average music. The second disappointing factor lies in the cold-chemistry and poorly enacted sequences between Tushar and Udita in the hot locations of Bangkok.

Films like 'Murder' and 'Jism' succeeded as the desired chemistry and oomph factor in these films worked wonders with the film's plot and resulted in their box office success.

'Aggar' has misdirected plots, loose scenes and sequences where actors are reduced to guinea pigs at the hand of incompetent director. 'Aggar' is a daunting and mysterious story of a woman who feels guilty of falling prey to a wrong man. The film rests on the theme that distorting relationship can have deadly consequences and result into fatal incidents.

Janvi (Udita Goswami), a sensuously looking executive of an advertising agency, enjoys life full of luxuries and wealth. She is married to an equally successful Dr Aditya Merchant (Shreyas Talpade), a psychiatrist. But, their relationship often gets estranged due to their busy schedules. Aryan (Tushar Kapoor), an errant lover who survives a mental sanatorium, has a depressed past of betrayed relationship with his office mate (Sophie Chaudhry). Dr. Aditya shows benevolence towards Aryan and lets him leave sanatorium on good conduct.

Destiny takes tricky turns when Janvi becomes suspicious about Aditya's extra-marital affair with gorgeous looking interior decorator (Sadhika). Aryan is unintentionally confronted with Janvi's secretary (Nauheed Cyrusi) in a coffee shop.

This leads to his entry in Janvi's multi-billionaire company. Depressed Janvi finds solace in Aryan's company and this friendship culminates into a sensuous relationship. Janvi's life takes another turn when the identity of the other woman is revealed.

She is torn between her lovable husband and an obsessed lover and things start turn uglier for her. Aryan haunts him everywhere and this obsession leads to a final fight in the climax where the wicked intentions of Aditya are revealed to Janvi.

'Aggar' has a conventional thriller plot of man scheming plots to rob his wife for wealth and ends up with unpredictable climax with lots of loose endings. It has a plot where the wicked husband chooses his patient as guinea pig to evade his wealthy wife's prosperity and wealth. The development of characters in the first half is itself too unsatisfactory and misdirected. This clearly gives a weird impression of its finale. Obsessed lover (Tushar Kapoor) is betrayed by her office compatriot (Sophie Chaudhry) and the affair ending in her accidental death is inadequately depicted.

This is represented in such a bizarre way that it fails to build sympathy for him. The ploy where psychiatrist (Shreyas Talpade) evacuates him out of the sanatorium and gets him appointed in his wife's office is even more absurd. Director Anant Mahadevan has gone too far in taking cinematic liberties in developing extra-marital chemistry but the impact is completely missing.

The second half rests on the avenging lover (Tushar Kapoor) who feels betrayed after being abandoned. It translates the film into an obsessive love story but the spark of vengeful hot-blooded saga is absolutely missing.

Blame it on spineless direction or ineffective acting that fails to build the tempo for this cold erotic thriller. Scheming doctor (Shreyas Talpade) emotes out his devilish notions in front of his wife and finally gets beaten by her.

This is poor scripting! Tushar Kapoor's coming out alive of the swimming pool after being brutally injured and savoring Udita from Shreyas, is simply preposterous. Why does the medical fraternity allow Shreyas to let off Tushar from sanatorium? How do small misunderstandings between Udita and Shreyas culminate into lustful chemistry between her and Tushar? The loose ends and overlapping of sub-plots kill the decorum of a typical thriller and this is where 'Aggar' falls apart.

The expectations from 'Aggar' are almost belied and neither the face value nor its uninspiring music has created any buzz in the market. The basic difference between 'Aksar' and 'Aggar' is the absence of Emraan Hashmi coupled with Himesh Reshammiya's music. Himesh Reshammiya's hectic schedule paved way for new composer Mithoon in 'The Train' and it proved blessing for its chartbusting musical success. Unfortunately, 'Aggar's music by Mithoon has failed to be frothy or peppy to lure teenagers to the theatres.

Emraan Hashmi has been replaced by modest and struggling Tushar Kapoor while the second lead has gone to talented but unconventional looking Shreyas Talpade. 'Aggar' stands bleak chances of finding acceptance among multiplex audiences as the mood has completely shifted towards comical genre.

The repetitive and predictable plots of typical erotic thrillers have been revisited many times and now they taste like a stale meal in a wrecked vessel. Anant Mahadevan has again proved incompetent as director after his strings of flops plus this movie.

His transition from romantic love stories to erotic thrillers has been a losing affair. Cinematography (K. Rajkumar) is brilliant in capturing exotic beaches of Bangkok and giving the film an urbane look. Mithoon's music is uninspiring and none of the tracks except "Bin Tere" makes any impact on viewers. 'Aggar' is expected to go with low openings for its lackluster display and promotion. The bad news of declining collections is predicted in coming weeks. In nutshell, it's a cold thriller with unwelcoming results.

Unconventional themes and subjects are the new taste of the filmy world and it's quite evident from the listings of last successful releases. There are plenty who try but few that succeed… 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' is one such experiment that succeeds and journeys into the heart and mind of a child with great innovation and ease.

'Nanhe Jaisalmer', a flick about child fantasies and dreams, is all about hope, love and friendship. It's an unusual fictional work where idol worship is the crux of the story. 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' falls into the cadre of films like 'The Blue Umbrella' and 'My Friend Ganesha' that invigorate moral preaching and thought-provoking subjects.

The main thrust of the film is on the awareness and importance of education and its implication among rural adults who sacrifice for their family and thus make the dreams of their dependants come true. Director Samir Karnik has methodically used the moral themes in the concept of hallucination through scripting and its treatment.

If Raju Hirani's 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' had Mahatma Gandhi as its peculiar theme, then 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' has screen idol Bobby Deol working as missionary for his little fan "Nanhe". It's really amazing that stories like 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' have attracted the commercial genre of directors and actors.

Sameer Karnik has matured tremendously as a filmmaker with this film after his disastrous directorial debut 'Kyun Ho Gaya Na'. It's indeed a great innovative effort and big leap when somebody like him matures with such a creative subject.

Even Bobby Deol took break from his reckless commercial projects by picking up such an intelligent subject and he delivers one of his best performances. Unfortunately, average viewer has never been influenced by child fictional dramas and consequently such films are awarded and not rewarded. Box office barometer cannot be a yardstick to decide a movie's credentials. This is difficult to imagine an average viewer sparing Rs 150 / 200 for such a film.

But by all standards, it dares to swim against the tide and proves to be a "paisa-vasool". Besides its peculiar theme, the film dares to be different without having gorgeous and bankable leading female star in the movie.

The glossy world of showbiz has innumerable stories but only a few connect with the passion and love of obsessive fans with their idol stars. In 70's, films like 'Guddi' (Dharmendra, Jaya Bhaduri) had a similar plot where a school girl was passionate about her screen idol and wanted to convey her feelings to him at any cost. Year 2007 brings Dharmendra's younger son Bobby Deol in his place where he is passionately adored by cute and lovable village boy.

'Nanhe Jaisalmer' is the second directorial effort by Samir Karnik to study the nature and passion of love that fans possess for their screen idols. They would do everything to get in touch with their screen idols.Their personal life is nothing beyond their screen idol that they adore and worship day and night. Finally, their greatest dream and desire is to live and enjoy the rest of their life with them.

'Nanhe Jaisalmer' is the story of one such lovable cute kid who has passion and obsession for his screen idol Bobby Deol. His prime dream is to experience and enjoy his company and thereafter relish each and every moment of his life with him though he has never met him personally. This obsessive fan is 'Nanhe' (Dwij Yadav), a 10 year old boy from Jaisalmer, a beautiful tourist town in Rajasthan. Nanhe has had a troubled childhood after being abandoned by his father.

Above all, it was the curse of illiteracy that jeopardized the lives of his mother (Pratiksha Lonkar) and sister (Rushita Singh). Nanhe has immaculate grasping power to connect himself with many foreign languages. However, he has had no formal studies; he is illiterate. Despite his adolescent age, he is the bread winner for his family. So, he acts as a sporty tourist guide with his camel "Raja".

There are illiterate villagers (Sharat Saxsena, Vivek Shaque) who befriend him in all his fun loving adventurers. Nanhe's imagination leads him to believe that one day he would meet his idol Bobby Deol. The obsession is so impulsive that he along with his sister writes a letter to Bobby telling him about each and every moment of his life.

Suddenly, Nanhe has a surprise of his life when he meets with Bobby in sandy deserts of Jaisalmer. However, the life is never the same for him.Bobby is equally compassionate about him and it results into their fruitful friendship.The bondage proves blissful for Nanhe and it totally reforms his life forever. Nanhe learns the importance of formal studies and the spirit of sacrificing personal ambitions for the family. It reforms him completely and awakens his fellow villagers.

The story takes a big jolt when Nanhe's bondage with Bobby Deol proves an illusion; his dreamy world of being with Bobby gets shattered. This adolescent kid has now grown into a mature young man Vikram Singh (Vatsal Seth), now winner of book titled "Nanhe Jaisalmer".

'Nanhe Jaisalmer' ends on a high spirited note that imagination has its positive repercussion that can really make dreams come true. It's really a great visual treat to experience such brilliant subject being conceptualized in beautiful sandy locations of Rajasthan with sincere and competent on and off screen performances.

'Nanhe Jaisalmer' completely belongs to child actor Dwij Yadav and director Sameer Karnik for showcasing such an innovation. The list of brilliant child performers gets one more name added with Dwij Yadav and its real great experience that this special segment is emerging fast and big for child actors in the film industry. This is Bobby Deol's finest performance of this year when he plays a reformist super star.

Pratiksha Lonkar and Rushita Singh deliver fine performances as Nanhe's mother and sister while Bina Kak deliveres another fine performance as a school teacher after her comical attire in 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya'. Sharat Saxsena, Rajesh Vivek and Viveq Shaque live up to expectations in the roles of illiterate villagers. Vatsal Seth has shown great improvisation after his disastrous debut in 'Tarzan-the wonder car' and is brilliant in closing sequences of the film.

Himesh Reshammiya's music has significant moments to share and it comes in soft serene tracks like "Nanhe Yaar" and "Kesariya" while the loud hip-shaking tracks are too flashy for subject and flow of the film. Monty's background score is effective and is infused magically in the film. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is simply brilliant ; he captures the ethnicity of beautiful Jaisalmer.

Scripting and screenplay department (Samir Karnik, Eklavya Singh Bhati and Aseem Arora) are remarkable and lend big support in lifting the spirits of this soulful offering. 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' has already been given "tax-free" status in Rajasthan and is expected to attract critical acclaim from all quarters.

Like 'The Blue Umbrella', this child fictional saga deserves to be screened at major film festivals and should be exempted from entertainment tax in metro cities. It is believed that good word of publicity and appreciation will be breaking ice for such a thought-provoking film and give it the desired success that it deserves.

Hallucination or ghost love stories and dark comedies have never been the flavor of this month but still they prop up as a surprise package in Ram Gopal Verma's 'Darling'. Ramu finds his form and he has regained his lost form with this innovatively scripted ghostly vendetta.

It may be quizzical to understand the premise of 'Darling', but it's clear that the filmmaker has infused the ghostly drama of 'Bhoot' and haunting impact of 'Company' to make things work properly in it. 'Darling' brings a different and unpredictable love relationship of a man and a ghost through this humorously penned scripting and impressive on and off screen performances.

Ramu's infatuation with 'Sholay' may be his career's biggest nightmare, but 'Darling' brings him back as a competent player in the marquee. It would have been better for him to have restricted himself to his style of filmmaking rather than trying to plagiarize old-age formulae. Secondly, 'Darling' proves better than his earlier works and the credit goes to crisp writing and ethical filmmaking techniques.

After 'Rangeela', 'Satya' and 'Company', chartbusting music has again played a pivotal role in lifting the spirits of his films. All the musical soundtracks had given enough publicity and promotion that guarantee a promising box office opening for the film.

It's indeed a sigh of relief to have revisited the RGV style of cinematic work after couple of misdirected impractical endeavors from him in the past few years. Ironically, RGV has preferred a humorously penned narration and execution in developing plots and structure of this differently fictionalized love story.

Besides its hilarious comical punches, the film haunts and thrills viewers in almost all its frames. If there are unpredicted spine-chilling tremors in the first half, then there are unexpected hilarious moments that cheer up audiences in the second half. RGV plants engrossing twists and turns lead the film to a promising dark thriller.

'Darling' opens up with Aditya (Fardeen Khan), a suave socialite who has two different lives to live. His married life flourishes with his wife Ashwini (Isha Koppikar) and seven-year old kid. On the contrary, he has inhibited love life and relationship with his office colleague, Gita (Esha Deol). Initially, he was in trouble for being in love with two women.

And, his worries grew bigger when he was loved and targeted by a ghost who was once the woman in his life! It all started when the verbal confrontation between Aditya and Gita turned ugly and resulted in Gita's untimely demise.

The reason for confrontation was Gita's pregnancy and her demand that Aditya dissociate with his wife and kid for her. The story triggers off with her death as now it's all between flirtatious Aditya and avenging ghost Gita.

Fardeen observes the first arrival of Esha Deol as ghost during sleep. He has some hilarious moments that are well executed and enacted. The voluptuous beloved-turned- ghost (Esha Deol) enters into Fardeen's office and makes hoodlum.

This is a fine aspects of taut screenplay. The scene where Esha beats Fardeen while he is making love to his wife (Isha Koppikar) is high on hilarious quotient. All such crispy and cheap comical gags show fine execution from the filmmaker's point of view and indeed a great style of a dark comedy.

'Darling's second major aspect is highly volatile and spine-chilling moment that sets the pace of this dark thriller. The hot-blooded verbal confrontation followed by Esha Deol's death delivers grim and dark moments. Esha Deol's turning into a fiery "ghost" to seek revenge through various expressions, moods and sentiments, is another highlight of the film.

The third and final major aspect lies in the brilliant on and off screen performances from Ramu's cast. Esha Deol proves to be the biggest winner and all the credit goes to her performance. The role of a grief-stricken beloved turning an avenging ghost is finely scripted and the actress matures with this role.

After the smash-hit 'Dhoom', it is another big occasion where she has shed inhibitions in getting into the soul of the character. Himesh Reshammiya's crooned and composed "Tadap" has already created buzz for the film and it's sultry on-screen display will further attract the audiences.

All the scenes where she confronts Fardeen scornfully are high points of her short lived film career. The devilish grimaces, roguish behavior and hot-headed love relationship brings her in the driver's seat of the show.

Fardeen Khan's improvised Hindi diction and refined acting skills are well coordinated with his impressive looks. His good fortune continues with this film after the stupendous success of 'Heyy Babyy'. His fearfully tormented expressions and sullen body languages are finely executed in the film. Isha Koppikar has second lead to play but still proves a better choice in the attire of a bhartiya nari (Indian woman) with her submissive looks and dress-up.

The climax of the film completely belongs to her where the reality of Fardeen-Esha relationship is unveiled. It's pity that the "Saathiya" song comes in the end titles as it could easily have materialized in the midst of the film.

If 'RGV ki Aag' has proved ineffective in its big acting departments then this time it's his protégé that delivers big surprises. Believe it or not, but the entire brigade of second lead actors delivers a commendable performance. Zakir Hussain, RGV favorite, has some hilariously punched one-liners that enthrall and deliver light moments in the film.

Upendra Limaye, villain of RGV's 'Shiva', surprises with good comical timing and is well suited in the attire of an investigation police officer. Even lesser known actor like Kota Srinivasa Rao, second lead villain in 'Sarkar', has some hilarious moments as psychiatrist.

'Darling's strongest point lies in its scripting and screenplay department (Prawal Raman and Kusum Punjabi) and it clearly indicates that a well scripted work can do wonders. The crispy one-liners, well coordinated events and unpredictability in its twists and turns, make things work for the film.

Cinematography (Amit Roy) delivers different camera angles to depict the grim and bright situations. RGV's films have always been high on technicalities and 'Darling' is one such example. Background scores (Prasanna Shekhar) and sound (Kunal Mehta) creates tremors. Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam's music is excellent in almost every track. Songs like "Aa Khushi Se" and "Saathiya" have slick choreography while "Tadap" has the desired sensuality.

'Darling' will probably be a big surprise for all those who have ripped off 'RGV ki Aag' and it's indeed a big comeback by the filmmaker in such a short span. The slick publicity and impressive promos will give it a promising opening and thereafter it will prosper after good mouth of publicity by media and public.

The predictable success of 'Darling' will eventually rinse away all the dirt of unwanted 'RGV Ki Aag'. In nutshell, Ramu's 'Darling' will deliver better results and a possible recovery from the aftermath of worthless and insignificant 'RGV Ki Aag'.

We all dream big by hitting skies, yet we underestimate and undermine ourselves. Kaushik Roy's critically acclaimed 'Apna Asmaan' centers on such thoughts and tries to impart a lesson to those who fail to fulfill their dreams. It's indeed a different and innovative subject to be visualized, but many times noble ideas fail to find suitable grounding because of sub-standard treatment and execution.

'Apna Asmaan' meaning "our very own sky" comes from the new breed of modern filmmakers who journey into uninhibited subjects. It takes a load of intellectual strength, visionary attitude and personal experience for delving into such offbeat subjects.

Debutante Kaushik Roy has had an introspective journey into the life of his son Rohan alias Orko while making this methodically different script. Lately, Nita Ambani, wife of entrepreneur Mukesh Ambani, took special interest in holding a painting exhibition of Orko and now this mentally challenged kid gets wider footage through 'Apna Asmaan'. The film has already been globe-trotting for the past few months, winning laurels even in Latin American entertainment sectors and making wider impacts at many film festivals.

The film works on the whims and fancies of achieving monumental heights by hitting the sky in the wake of adversities. Every human deserves "Ek Mutthi Asmaan…" for himself, against all odds but every dream has a price tag that we underestimate and neglect. 'Apna Asmaan' works on these theorie. 'Apna Asmaan' tries to be much high on its cinematic liberties as the crux of the film revolves around a drug - Brain Booster.

It also brings out the nefarious endeavors of medicos but the climax proves a bit colder. It's indeed a noble subject where such malpractices in the medical profession are unearthed. However, the end is too amateurish in its execution.

A crook like Dr Sathya (Anupam Kher), the brainchild behind Brain Booster, hides in old-age home as a lunatic patient to avoid his arrest. Buddhi (Dhruv Panjuiani), the protagonist, suddenly turns a kid after being medicated with this dare-devil drug! This is unbelievable. Buddhi's turning into modern Aryabhatta by solving difficult problems publicly is indigestible.

So, he behaves like a spoilt-brat and finally gets back into his original abnormalities even after being treated with antidote. Such assumptions lead to a conclusion that one should run after his dreams and believe in the nature of law. 'Apna Asmaan' is high on its fictional plot but fails to fulfill expectations from such an internationally acclaimed film.

Budhhi (Dhruv P. Panjuani), mildly autistic teenager has his shares of dreams but his parents have much big dreams from him. Like any parent, Ravi (Irrfan Khan) and Padmini (Shobana), father and mother respectively of Buddhi wished the best for their teenage son but the only difference being that their son wasn't normal.

Buddhi has deficiencies; he isn't able to study the way other children of his age do. His abnormalities lead his mother to frustration. His father Ravi carries the guilt of being responsible for his son's mental state. (When Buddhi was a child he was accidentally dropped by Ravi).

Kamini, gold medalist in Mathematics, waited for a miracle to treat her son to normalcy. She always desired her son to be excellent in studies. Buddhi's flair for art was immaculate but unfortunately it didn't quite impress her. The regular taunts from her mother-in-law made the situation worse.Dr. Sen (Rajat Kapoor), a neurologist and close family friend, tried to make her understand that it wasn't possible for Buddhi to be as normal as she would like.

Sen was benevolent towards Padmini and her son and wanted them to understand that Buddhi was indeed a special child with extraordinary skills. Dr. Sathya (Anupam Kher), a qualified Ayurvedic physician and manipulative medico, had invented a drug named Brain Booster which turned a dumb person into an intellectual and sharp-minded person.

But, the treatment has side effects, too, like that of memory loss. He had a big ambition of procuring Nobel Prize and so he planned to make Buddhi his patient for his research. Depressed Ravi meets scheming Dr. Sathya and agrees to administer the drug to his son. Medicine works wonder and Buddhi turns into a genius "Aryabhatta" but forgets about his past.

He faces major problems as he turns a bewildered and an unpredictable guy. Now, Buddhi is a violent spoilt-brat who abuses his parents and treats them in the ugliest possible way. Padmini and Ravi's dreams are shattered and they look for Dr. Sathya for an antidote of this deadly Brain Booster. 'Apna Asmaan' ends on a happy note where the over-ambitious parents recognize their faults and believe in God-given talent (painting).

Debutante Kaushik Roy has treaded on a significant path that is still an unexplored subject in the marquee but the film lacks the desired niche to allure class audiences. The film tries to be high on fictional plots and characters in its narration.

Irfan Khan excels in his good-natured character of an over-ambitious and lovable father. After the success of 'Life in a…Metro', he has developed a niche for himself in humorously penned roles and there are sequences where he excels. Shobhana, a trusted and talented South Indian actress and dancer, delivers a mature performance and adds substance to the subject.

Debutante Dhruv Panjuiani emotes and acts well as autistic child and thereafter shows confidence in his arrogant image. Rajat Kappor proves again that he is a dependable actor. Anupam Kher plays a pivotal but brief role ands still he leaves a mark with his performance.

Leslie Lewis' music works appreciably in the dark and bright situations of the film. Cinematography (Barun Mukherjee) works well while sound (Rajendra Hedge) has phenomenal impact in the climax of the film.

After watching 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag' last week, it was like taking a big risk to go to the theatre this Friday for what director Indra Kumar has made after 'Masti' and 'Pyare Mohan'. Kids' channel Nick being the media partner for the film, my son (who accompanied me this time) insists that the film is for kids as well.

The film has just started and the director is set to introduce his characters to the audience. Introduction of Arshad, Ashish Chaudhary and Ritesh Deshmukh is taken with a large round of laughter in the theatre.

However, my eleven year old son comments on the introduction of Javed Jaffery's character. "Daddy, this scene is borrowed from Mr. Beans." He tells me this just after ten minutes of the commencement of the movie, and questions the originality of the content. I like Delhi as its people give a clean verdict on every film on the very first day of its release. All films that hit in the first show (on the first day) do well in the coming weeks and the vice versa.

Incidentally, 'Dhamaal' had more than two third of the house full. I consider it to be a nice opening for a director who has made super hit films like 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Raja' and 'Ishq' in the past though he had gone into oblivion later for some of his wrong decisions and succumbing to aura of stars.

He has also made super flops like 'Mann', 'Aashiq' and 'Rishtey'. But, the comedy fever has brought him back in business. Now, he has a good team to bank upon. So, if 'Dhamaal' is any indication, he is out there to set some new rules of film making. 'Dhamaal' becomes the first film of its sort in Hindi Cinema where there is no female lead opposite any main male character.

The film rolls over and it sets the perfect mood with Pizza scene. Every one will remember this scene forever.

Land lady (Suhasini Mulay) falls a prey to all the misdeeds of four good for nothing fellows -- Roy, Adi, Manav and Boman (played by Ritesh, Arshad, Javed and Ashish).

The scene shows the promise of a good film and Indra Kumar never lets his viewers down. He weaves jokes after jokes and puts the story of a criminal on the run with Bose (Prem Chopra) leaving Rs 100 million hidden in a Goa park for this gang of four boys.

But, before they share the treasure among themselves, Inspector Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) makes their life hell. The tussle reaches to a point where the gang and the inspector agree to look out for the money together, but only to disagree very soon.

The film has a hilarious plot and all the money is vasool before the interval. In the post-interval the film slows down; one, because Indra Kumar is confused as how to take the film to Goa. Two, the climax doesn't have any shocker.

The lift sequences start boring people and so does the airplane going out of the control sequence. There are many hilarious and "hold your stomach" scenes in the film. And, and the four being hanged by the Inspector ranks as one of the best among them. All the credit for such an entertaining film goes to none other than director Indra Kumar.

He gets a team of lesser known writers in Balwinder Singh Suri, Paritossh Painter and Bunty Rathod. The brainstorming gives birth to wonderful situations and Indra Kumar makes every character in the film look real. There is no melodrama and no loud acting; just fun and Dhamaal.

Among actors, Sanjay Dutt once again gets a hit in 'Dhamaal' though after remaining in jail. Last time, he had a hit in 'Khalnayak' after journeying into jail.

His persona is well caught by Indra Kumar as Inspector Kabir, though he doesn't get many scenes to show his comic timing but his appearance in the film certainly lifts the film to A level. Arshad Warsi is as humorous as always, yet Javed Jaffery scores over him by playing a dumbo kid brother to him.

Ritesh Deshmukh is scaling new heights film after film and comedy seems to be working very well for him. His name Roy is lifted from 'Bluff Master' and in this movie he is not a pet but a problem itself.

He does his job very amicably as a private detective. The film also has some good support from Asrani and Sanjay Mishra. Adnan Sami composes a very good title track for the film. On the whole, a good film to watch this week end.

Is imitation the best form of appreciation? Do remakes guarantee box-office success? Definitely Not! The mediocre to poor box office results coupled with hallucination for remakes has only delivered blunders and the list gets longer with this poorly conceived flick.

The success of escapist cinema in films like 'Dhoom' and its sequel followed by the success of Hollywood's 'Ocean 11' may have encouraged heist thrillers. In fact, they were never out of fashion as such thrillers embarked with gloss and sheen in films like 'Apna Sapna Money Money' and 'Cash' with moderate to poor results.

Director Ananth Narayan Mahadevan has so far been introspective about romantic stories and erotic thrillers but this time he tries to rejuvenate the vintage charm of 70's thriller through this remake. It's all together a different set of experiences but certainly not the finest attempt in recreating history through remakes.

'Victoria No. 203', a diamond heist thriller and an inspirational remake from the all-time hit with similar name comes almost unannounced with zero promotional and musical impact. It sounds quite simple and easy when the word "remake" reaches any producer's ears; it means a readymade script with guaranteed success.

The first major obstacle that these remakes confront is the lack of proper configuration among refined actors and the potential director that can make things work charismatically on the big screen. Shah Rukh Khan is the dominating star in Bollywood but even his charisma has failed to match with Amitabh Bachchan's indomitable stature in 'Don - the chase begins again'.

Similarly, this poorly baked remake proves too meek in comparison to the all-time super hit 'Victoria No. 203' (1972) in all departments. Brij Sadanah's blockbuster 'Victoria No. 203' had the fine teamwork of brilliant direction, tight screenplay, commendable acting performances and above all chartbusting music that lifted the spirit of the film in almost every frame. In 70's, the diamond heist thriller was an unexplored genre and with its remarkable treatment it made history.

The magical jodi (pair) of Ashok Kumar and Pran is still fresh in viewers' memory but this time it's a miscalculated gambit in pitching two veterans like Anupam Kher and Om Puri in their shoes. The worse part of the film is its below average humor quotient that decimates all its strengths.

Scripting and screenplay (Sanjiv Puri and Manoj Tyagi) are lifeless and there isn't a single comical element that evokes laughter in their chemistry. Anupam Kher's versatile acting skills prove futile when he is shouldered with lousy and faint-edged one-liners.

The actor still shows some potential through his effective body language but the outcome is sheer disaster. Om Puri is a complete miscast in the role of crook Rana and it clearly shows in his mumbled dialogue delivery, and his unimpressive facial expressions prove worthless in forming any sort of chemistry with Anupam Kher.

Debutante Sonia Mehra is no star material and she neither holds any grace or caliber to match into Saira Banu's chirpy and vivacious performance. Jimmy Shergill delivers another unimpressive solo performance and with such silly scripting at the helm, it ends up like a complete washout.

Preeti Jhangiani looks ravishing in her devilish role and her alluring looks are one of the strong aspects of the film. She still lacks the skills of a competent actress but her looks are mesmerizing and completely overdo all the actors. Tora Khasgir's action skill combined with her body language gives the film a confident start and makes her notable. But thereafter the film fumbles in almost every frame.

Anant Mahadevan's 'Victoria No 203' starts off with an exhibition of some of the unique and wonderful diamonds in the world. It's worth of more than 100 billions ( ?) is the object of attraction and desire for Bobby Bombata (Javed Jaffrey), a multi billionaire industrialist, his moll Devyani (Preeti Jhangiani), a hi-profile burglar Tora (Tora Khasgir), her brother Karan (Rajesh Khera), a criminal Ranjit (Kamal Sadanah), a diamond expert Jimmy (Jimmy Sheirgill). The story unfolds through the mindless adventures of two small crooks - Raja (Anupam Kher) and Rana (Om Puri).

In a hi-profile diamond burglary, Tora double crosses Bobby Bombatta and the gang. Tora is killed by Ranjeet but has diamond that rests in the lamp-post of "Victoria No. 203". She has a secret to tell to this brother Karan (Rajesh Khera) but even he is eliminated from the plot.

Rana and Raja steal a luxury car through Devyani carrying the dead body of Karan. They discover a key in his wig and the story culminates into diamond heist thriller. Poor Victoria driver Raman is arrested for Tora's murder, leaving behind his distressed daughter Sara (Sonia Mehra) with his responsibilities.

The poor girl disguises as man with her horse carriage Victoria No. 203 around the town for living. Jimmy (Jimmy Shergill), a police cop disguising as diamond specialist, is on the look out for these diamonds and bumps into Sarah's Victoria by chance. The predictable love story develops and finally ends up with run and chase for diamonds.

The climax of the film is amateurish and outlandish by all standards of filmmaking. It tries to be as hilarious as 'Andaz Apna Apna' but proves too incompetent to be termed as anything professional or commercially viable.

Bobby Bombatta's complete gang (almost every body in the star cast) ensembles in Mehboob Studio where director (Anant Mahadevan) and fight master (Sham Kaushal) are shooting for a Tamil film. The shooting of the film takes so many weird turns that all their plans get hampered . The configuration of events and thereafter the performances lack hilarious punches and so does the screenplay that never rises to the occasion.

Director Anant Mahadevan delivers one of his most forgettable works with 'Victoria No. 203' and by far an obituary for all remakes. Poor vision, bad choice of actors and colorless execution completely work against him. Viju Shah delivers his worst musical compositions and even revamped versions of super-hit tracks "Do Bechare" and "Thoda sa Thero" fails to bind audiences.

Action (Sham Kaushal) is the only bright aspect and spotlight of the film that works positively for the film. The action sequence where Tora Khasgir along with Javed Jaffery steals the diamond is a good inspirational lift from 70's hit 'Shalimar'.

Even Tora's fight sequences are remarkably handled and the scene where she introduces herself to Javed Jaffery is the high point.

'Victoria No 203' is another example where the concept of producing remakes misfires and it will be absurd to predict anything promising about its box-office results.

Hrithik has agreed to do the scene and it’s going to be a brief appearance.

The latest addition to the stellar cast of Om Shanti Om happens to be Hrithik Roshan. If sources are to be believed, Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan have already spoken to the actor about this special sequence, which will be shot later this month.

However, they are yet to decide on the shooting dates, as Hrithik is currently busy with Jodha Akbar in Karjat.

The actor will play himself and will be seen gracing an awards gala in the film, alongside Shah Rukh. In the sequence, both the actors contend for the Best Actor award at the popular Filmfare Awards.

According to a source, Hrithik has agreed to do the scene and it’s going to be a brief appearance. “Farah will shoot with him once he is back from Karjat,” he informs.

Set in tinseltown of the ’70s, the film traces Shah Rukh’s journey from a struggling actor to a superstar. Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan will also feature with Hrithik and Shah Rukh in the same sequence.

A source close to Farah says, “They are all playing themselves, each, a nominee at the Filmfare Awards. Akshay will film in the first week of October.”

Watching RGV's Aag is like committing SUICIDE

There is no beating around the bush when it comes to the verdict on Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.

“It’s the worst film I have seen in my entire life,” says a moviegoer outside a Delhi theater.

To start with, the rustic locales of Ramgarh which gave a sense of realism to the setting of the 1975 blockbuster has now been transported into suburban Mumbai with most of the film shot on film sets with artificial lighting – stylish but still leaves one feeling claustrophobic.

Though, the storyline of director Ram Gopal Varma's film is a spin-off of the original, the lack of characterisation proves to be the jarring difference between the classic and this forgettable flick.

Sample this – the most famous villain Gabbar Singh is now Babban Singh, never mind the name, but the evergreen dialogues of Gabbar like ‘Kitne aadmi the’ is now poorly compensated with Babban's facial contortions.
Even the friendship of Raj and Heero is shallow – forget about the Yeh Dosti bonding that one could die for. This 21st Century Jai and Veeru remain strangers till the very end and same goes for the chemistry or rather the lack of it between Raj and Durga.

Speaking of the leading ladies, Nisha Kothari as the vivacious Basanti or Ghungroo in this case, is a tapori with a bidi hanging from her lip, who also happens to be a Rajinikanth fan.

She struts around town in her auto personified as ‘laila’ but all through we just wait for her to light her bidi and actually smoke one! So, much like the movie – this aag too just doesn't light up.

With critics and fans trashing the movie, it looks like watching this one would be pure sooocide.
